Meet the new ODOD

By

Heinz Stucki

Much of what we are able to accomplish in Tuscarawas County depends on our close collaboration with state government.  Significant changes in both people and policies are occurring at the Department of Development and in the Governor's Office.

The CIC and Chamber are helping the Eastern Ohio Development Alliance and the Ohio Economic Development Association organize and promote a regional forum on Friday March 30 at Salt Fork State Park for local business leaders and new state officials to "meet and greet" each other.  Mark Barbash, the Department of Development's Chief Economic Development Officer; Mark Shanahan, Governor Strickland's Energy Advisor; and other officials will be present.

The forum will begin at 9:00 AM and conclude with lunch.  Be on the lookout for an official invitation and don't miss this opportunity to show Tuscarawas County's colors.
February/March is...

Inconvenience Yourself Day. Feb. 28.   A day to think about others and look for ways to inconvenience yourself while making the lives of others better or easier. For more information, browse www.inconvenienceyourself.com

International Listening Awareness Month.

March 1-31.

Dedicated to learning more about the impact that listening has on all human activity. To promote the study, development and teaching of effective listening in all set-tings. For more information, browse: www.listen.org
The Time To Act Is Now!

One of the benefits of being a member of The Tuscarawas County Chamber of Commerce is that we can provide you with cost saving opportunities.  However, Ohio's employers have only one opportunity to enroll in a workers' compensation group rating plan.  Now is your chance to sign up with our plan!  Through our partnership with CompManagement, Inc., an employer can potentially save 20% to 90% on workers' compensation premiums.

CompManagement is in the final stages of group rating enrollment.  The deadline for filing groups with the Ohio Bureau of Workers' Compensation is February 28, 2007.  If you have received a quote through the Tuscarawas County Chamber of Commerce and have not responded, you must complete and submit the appropriate forms to CompManagement by February 20th to be included in the 2007 workers' compensation group plan.

If you have not received a free no-obligation workers' compensation premium analysis, call CompManagment, Inc. at 1.800.825.6755, option 3 to speak with a  CompManagement Group Rating Representative.

ACT NOW before time runs out!

Keep talking:  Be a great conversationalist

Chamber LogoAccording to etiquette expert Jodi R.R. Smith in Mannersmith Monthly, conversing meaningfully in a concise way is an important skill to develop. Here are a few of her tips:

·         Don't be shy. Go ahead and be the first to speak. Ask an open-ended question to kick off the conversation.

·         Be inquisitive. Let your curiosity drive the conversation. People love to be asked questions about themselves. But remember to keep it on the right level, you're not interrogating the person, you're trying to have a pleasant conversation.

·         Listen to the other person. Try not to fall into the trap of planning what you are going to say next. Really focus on what the person who is talking to you is saying. When you do this, after you walk away, people will probably think you are a great conversationalist.

·         Don't be drab. Be ready to talk about someplace you've been lately, a good book you've read, something you've enjoyed. You're best bet is to talk about something positive.

·         Avoid the dirty details of your life. While the other person may be interested in listening to you, you don't want to reveal everything about yourself. There are some things that are best kept to yourself. Use discretion when you converse.

·         End the conversation at a high point. Remember, this is a quick conversation we're talking about. Average length is probably two to eight minutes.

Good communication is as stimulating as black coffee, and just as hard to sleep after.

Want to skip the airport security line?  Here's how

planeIf you're a business traveler, one way to move through airports faster is to become a U.S. Registered Traveler. According to a Forbes story by Tara Weiss, for $99.95 per year, travelers go through a "Security Threat Assessment" from the Transportation Security Administration. When a traveler is approved, that means he or she will no longer have to wait in the regular security lines, but instead will be expedited to a Registered Traveler line where they will show their cards and be granted entry quickly. Cindy Rosenthal of Clear Registered Traveler, the private company hosting the program, says it will take only about three minutes to get through the line. The program will be launched in select cities first before expanding.
Volunteer Spotlight
becca

Rebecca (Becca) Davis enrolled in Big Brothers Big Sisters in July of 2005.  In September, the perfect match for her came in the form of Little Sister Katelynn.  In the year plus that she has been matched, Becca has gone above and beyond the call of duty.  She and Katelynn have attended more agency-sponsored events than any other match.  She also contributes much more time to Katelynn than the required 4 hours per month minimum.  Becca has volunteered countless hours of her time helping out in other facets of the agency itself.  She attends, donates, recruits, and participates in every fundraiser we have.  In addition, both parties recently reported in their yearly evaluations, strong improvements with Katelynn in almost every single area when compared with last year.

When once asked how she felt about being a part of Big Brothers Big Sisters, she responded, "I think it is really important to give these kids someone to look up to.  I think some kids see how their parents are and think that they will end up that way, too (good or bad), without realizing that they have the power to make their own choices and become whoever they want to be.  I know that some of the Littles' parents might have a hard time expressing their emotions to the kids, so maybe the kids think that they don't care; but the fact that there is another adult who is CHOOSING to be involved in that child's life means the world, I'm sure.  It's a great reminder to me, too, about how little things can make a world of difference".
Business of the Quarter
omctc

Occupational Medicine Center of Tuscarawas County was the Business of the Quarter for December of 2006.  Dr. Nicholas Varrati and wife Barbara, a registered nurse, opened up the doors of OMCTC in April of 1994.  OMCTC offers standard occupational medicine services such as urine drug screening, breath alcohol testing, post-offer physical examinations, acute and chronic injury management, X-ray and other testing.

Over the years their services have expanded and they are now capable offering injury management, post-offer and Department of Transportation physical exams, and Occupational Safety and Health Administration compliance services.

In addition to the day to day operations of their business, Nick and Barb are very active and contribute their time and resources to several very worthy causes in Tuscarawas County.  OMCTC continues to be a great community partner and helps add to the economic growth of Tuscarawas County.  Businesses like OMCTC are what make Tuscarawas County a great place live, work, and play.
