Tuscarawas County Permissive Sales Tax Renewal
The Tuscarawas County Chamber of Commerce is pleased to announce that we have overwhelmingly endorsed the renewal of the 1% Permissive Sales Tax for Tuscarawas County.  We urge you to vote YES in favor of this renewal.  It is important that residents understand that this is not a new tax.  It is a renewal and it will NOT increase.

"This tax provides a crucial source of funding for government services that are vital to the residents and businesses of Tuscarawas County," said Adam Bausch, co-Chair of the Tuscarawas County Chamber of Commerce Legislative Committee.

The Permissive Sales Tax will be on your ballot as Issue 10.  Tuscarawas County residents are not the only people that will be paying the tax.  Any visitor that comes into our area also contributes to the tax; close to $2 million dollars is the amount generated from visitors coming into Tuscarawas County.

As Tuscarawas County moves into the future it is necessary for the residents to show support of their community.  If we want Tuscarawas County to continue to be a great place to Live, Work, and Play - then we need to stand in support if Issue 10.  Please join the Tuscarawas County Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors in supporting Tuscarawas County and vote YES on Issue 10.

Chamber's New Publication - Visions

The Times-Reporter and the Tuscarawas County Chamber of Commerce had a Vision.  "We can do this!"  Tuscarawas County has a great resource in having a local newspaper and quality local printers.  In the past the Chamber has had outside contractors publish our quality of life publications. Mike Starn approached us to do the publication locally and we accepted.
Visions has great articles on some of our great tourist locations, the Tech Park, Young Professionals Program, Safety Council, 2020, KSU Tuscarawas and much more.  We invite you stop by and pick up one or several.
Visions is ready for you to have on display at your office, waiting room, lounge, reception area, even in your home.   You can also utilize this publication as part of a packet of information sent to potential new employees that would like information on our area.
We look forward to a great partnership with the Times-Reporter in the years to come.

The Ohio Stratigraphic Borehole

       By Heinz Stucki

The Ohio stratigraphic borehole test -- boy, is that a mouthful!  In reality, it is a research project that will involve drilling a test well to a depth of about 8,600 feet to confirm the suitability of Eastern Ohio's geology to store liquid carbon dioxide.  Drilling is scheduled to begin in May or June and will take five to six weeks.  The Ohio Coal Development Office, the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, and Battelle Memorial Institute will be conducting the test on the site that had been submitted for FutureGen by the Tuscarawas County Community Improvement Corporation.  The CIC is acting as a local facilitator.

A very important ancillary benefit of the project will be its marketing impact.  The test well is another important step in our efforts to attract advanced energy businesses to Tuscarawas County.  It will increase our national image as a location with all the infrastructure advanced energy projects require.  It will send a strong signal to companies to consider Tuscarawas County for their advanced and alternative energy projects.

The CIC has formed a mid-Ohio energy consortium with the Wayne Economic Development Council, the Stark Development Board, the Ohio Agricultural Research and Development Center (OARDC) in Wooster, the Stark Fuel Cell Center, and others to create a regional advanced energy park.  The Ohio Department of Development and Congressman Regula and Congressman Space are represented on the consortium's steering committee, as is a firm that hopes to manufacture synthetic crude oil for the Department of Defense in the park.  A cellulosic ethanol plant using waste paper, stover, and switch grass as feedstocks is another initial potential tenant.  OARDC has determined that just the wastepaper currently disposed of in the Countywide Landfill could be converted to 25,000,000 gallons of ethanol per year.

An informational meeting on the test well project is set for 7-9 PM Thursday, May 3 in room 126 of the Kent State University Tuscarawas Science and Advanced Technology Building, 330 University Drive N.E., New Philadelphia.  ODNR Director Sean D. Logan and representatives of the ODNR Division of Geological Survey and Battelle Memorial Institute will share details of the deep well research project, the broader technology of carbon sequestration, and how the proposed project may further economic development in the area. Attendees will also have an opportunity to ask questions about the Salem Township site and the overall project.

While the Ohio stratigraphic borehole test will study what is deep down, the prospects for advanced energy in Tuscarawas County are way up.

Before you leave the office, do one more thing

If you need to increase your daily productivity, you might want to give this easy method a try: At the end of your day, do one more thing before you leave. This concept is simple, says Jeffrey J. Mayer on SucceedinginBusiness.com, but it takes discipline. Once you reach the end of your day and feel you have accomplished everything that needs to be done, don't leave before you do one more thing. Make a phone call to a contact you've been meaning to get in touch with, file the papers that are piling up on your desk. Write the memo you were going to do tomorrow. At the end of the week you will have accomplished five more tasks than you would have otherwise. At the end of the month, you'll have accomplished about 20 more tasks and over the course of a year you will have knocked out more than 200 extra tasks by doing one extra thing per day.

Communicate important information in the most personable way possible

When you need to communicate something important to a worker, what is the best communication vehicle? Sending an e-mail might seem simplest, but if the subject is really important, it's probably best to communicate in a way that conveys body language cues, or at least tone of voice.

Face-to-face communication is best for big issues, but in this age of far-flung staff members, it is not always possible. A phone call can at least convey tone of voice, which can tell the person you're communicating with a lot about where you're coming from.

There is a lot of room for misinterpretation and miscommunication when you decide to communicate important information via e-mail. If you do choose to do this, it's probably best to send the kind of e-mail you like to receive. Make it friendly-and as much as possible try to eliminate any chances of misinterpretation.

When it comes to sunglasses, color matters

Texas RoadhouseDoes it matter what color the lenses of your sunglasses are as long as they have the UV protection tag on them? According to Ladies' Home Journal Health Journal, it does. Columbia University professor of ophthalmology Janet Sparrow says, "The blue light spectrum in sunlight is particularly dangerous." This is because it can create free radicals, unstable oxygen molecules that may precipitate macular degeneration, the most common cause of vision impairment in the United States. That's why you should avoid sunglasses that have blue-tinted lenses-they don't filter out any blue light. A better choice, according to LHJ, is yellow or amber tints for your lenses because they are more effective at reducing the amount of blue light that might reach your eyes. Dark tinted glasses will reduce your overall exposure to all wavelengths of light. Also choose glasses that protect against both UVA and UVB rays.
