GenXers Reap Benefits Too!
Are you a GenXer just entering the work force? While you may find it tough to break the ice on a new career, keep in mind there is an easy way to keep your zeal alive and increase your experience exponentially: Find solace in your association. As you struggle to make a name for yourself, keep in mind that associations are the ticket to your future.
Here are a few reasons why:
Take advantage of educational opportunities. Associations realize their members have employees who possess different skill levels, and they cater to the beginners just as much as the seasoned professional. If you don't plan on pursuing another degree, or at least not in the near future, your association's training is an invaluable resource in filling your educational needs.
Seek job opportunities. When it comes to whom you know, associations are the source for finding the right fit. Attend the various meetings we host throughout the year, so you can keep a close eye on potential opportunities and send the signal that you are up-and-coming.
Look for a few good ideas. Leading the way in promoting fresh approaches to doing business, your association is determined to consistently provide members with innovative ways of thinking. When you volunteer for committees, not only do you gain beyond-the-job experience; you also bring a new attitude to the table.
Find mentors here. Your association provides you with the one asset you need most in developing your professional skills and learning about the possibilities: variety. While old school mentoring pairs one experienced executive with the new kid in town, as an association member you can seek out multiple mentors who are more than willing to offer advice and tricks of the trade.
As your career takes off, queue up at the starting line with your association, and you'll begin accelerating in the right direction.
